As a premier academic health science centre, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) is committed to exemplary Nursing Student Education and welcomes over 700 nursing students per year. 

Placement experiences are offered to ensure learning objectives are met while meeting the needs of our patients, families and units in keeping with our Mission, Vision and Values. 

SJHH is committed to, and recognizes the importance of optimal nursing student placements and preceptors in helping students develop the critical thinking knowledge, skills and judgment they will require to provide excellent patient care. We also recognize the important link between excellent placement opportunities, recruitment and the future of the nursing profession. At St. Joseph's we enthusiastically welcome, engage, support, educate and evaluate our nursing students and consider them respected members of our health care team. Furthermore our students are regularly provided with important information and useful links to areas of interest to enhance their placements and learning objectives.

St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton's commitment to the nursing profession and patients is reflected in our Nursing Vision, Mission and philosophy.

We will strive to accommodate learner placements wherever possible provided that:

  • The learner upholds the Mission and Values of SJHH
  • The learner and external faculty (if applicable) follow the policies and procedures of the Hospital
  • The learner must be supervised by a SJHH staff person or medical staff member or a supervisor provided by the partner learner institution
  • The learner placement will not compromise patient/client safety and care
  • The learner placement can be accommodated by present budget, staffing levels and not interfere with corporate/unit initiatives
  • SJHH reserves the right to:
    1. participate in the selection of learners for placement
    2. suspend (dismiss) any student whose conduct jeopardizes the well being of patients/clients or staff
    3. set rules/guidelines/requirements for specific services, atypical placements and specialized units

What Placement Opportunities are available for Nursing Students?

We provide placements for:

  • Level 2, 3, 4 BScN
  • Graduate programs including masters, NP, PHD
  • RPN including all semesters and pre-grad
  • Continuing education  Internationally Trained programs

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton gives priority to clinical placements for nursing health sciences' learners registered with the Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University and Mohawk/McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences, however, when possible every effort is made to accommodate nursing students from other universities/colleges that we are affiliated with.

Clinical placement opportunities include:

  • Peri-operative including Day Surgery, Operating Room, PACU, Surgery Centre
  • Post-op Surgical including ophthalmology, gastroenterology, musculoskeletal, thoracic, gynecological, bariatric, head and neck, cardiovascular, plastics, urology, renal transplant;
  • Cancer Care
  • Critical Care and level 2 including, Intensive Care, Surgical Stepdown, Medical Stepdown,
  • Emergency and Urgent Care
  • General Internal Medicine including clinical teaching units, nephrology, complex care,
  • Rehabilitation
  • Mental Health and Addictions including emergency, acute, geriatric, schizophrenia, forensics, mood disorders;
  • Women’s and Infant’s Program including birthing, maternal newborn and special care nursery;
  • Kidney and Urinary Program including clinics and hemodialysis; 
  • a wide variety of both Mental Health outpatient clinics, Medical Clinics and Ambulatory Care clinics including diabetes, eye and outpatient programs.
How do I arrange a Nursing placement at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton?

Please be aware that the availability of and numbers of placements in specific areas is subject to change from semester to semester.

What are the Pre-Placement Requirements?

The following documentation must be submitted to the Nursing Student Placement Coordinator ( prior to the start of your placement:

  • Unpaid Learner Safety & Training Compliance Report (this form will be provided to the school upon confirmation of placement)
