Nursing Learner - FAQ

What Placement Opportunities are available for Nursing Students?

We provide placements for:

  • Level 2, 3, 4 BScN
  • Graduate programs including masters, NP, PHD
  • RPN including all semesters and pre-grad
  • Continuing education  Internationally Trained programs

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton gives priority to clinical placements for nursing health sciences' learners registered with the Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University and Mohawk/McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences, however, when possible every effort is made to accommodate nursing students from other universities/colleges that we are affiliated with.

Clinical placement opportunities include:

  • Peri-operative including Day Surgery, Operating Room, PACU, Surgery Centre
  • Post-op Surgical including ophthalmology, gastroenterology, musculoskeletal, thoracic, gynecological, bariatric, head and neck, cardiovascular, plastics, urology, renal transplant;
  • Cancer Care
  • Critical Care and level 2 including, Intensive Care, Surgical Stepdown, Medical Stepdown,
  • Emergency and Urgent Care
  • General Internal Medicine including clinical teaching units, nephrology, complex care,
  • Rehabilitation
  • Mental Health and Addictions including emergency, acute, geriatric, schizophrenia, forensics, mood disorders;
  • Women’s and Infant’s Program including birthing, maternal newborn and special care nursery;
  • Kidney and Urinary Program including clinics and hemodialysis; 
  • a wide variety of both Mental Health outpatient clinics, Medical Clinics and Ambulatory Care clinics including diabetes, eye and outpatient programs.

What are the Pre-Placement Requirements?

St. Joe’s is implementing NirvSystem to manage our learner onboarding processes effective for all placements new/returning students for placements starting September 1st 2021 onward.

Prior to your 1st placement at St. Joe’s for the academic year, you will receive a welcoming email from VPEducationOffice@stjoes.ca with the link to NirvSystem, user name & link to set password.

Once logged onto NirvSystem, you will be guided through completing any pre-placement requirements (e.g. eModules, upload / sign documents, training etc.)

How to Register in NirvSystem

  1. Log into NirvSystem and complete the registration the form as soon as you receive the registration email. This is to ensure your computer account builds/reactivations are ready for your placement.
  2. If you require Dovetale (Epic EMR) or any other training, you be prompted to schedule yourself for the training session that best suits your schedule in the Event Manager. Note if you need to reschedule a training session you will need to “Opt out” and reschedule yourself for an alternate session available in the Event Manager.
  3. You also will launch your virtual Dovetale training session and access key documents including your St. Joe’s computer credentials (Hospital Items – Computer Access Tab) in NirvSystem.
  4. If your NirvSystem password link has expired or you have forgotten your NirvSystem password:
    • Go to https://stjoes.nirvsystem.com/
    • Click on ‘Forgot your password?’
    • Enter your school email address
    • A ‘Reset Password’ email will be sent to this email address. If you do not receive the email after a few minutes, check your ‘Junk’ folder
    • Enter a new password
  5. If you do not complete your placement requirements, you’ll receive reminder emails 10 days, 5 days and 1 day prior to your placement start date.
  6. At the end of your placement, you will receive an email with a link to a post-placement survey.
